S.E.T.

The Sheriff Enforcement Team

The Sheriff Enforcement Team (S.E.T.) is a group of Macomb Sheriff Detectives who investigate violent crimes, conduct narcotics investigations, performs surveillance, execute search warrants, makes fugitive apprehensions, and handle sensitive investigations.

Members of S.E.T. work with Crimestoppers, confidential informants, other police agencies, and generate tips from the general public.

Sheriff’s Enforcement Team members also review daily crime reports and develop information from a wide array of sources, both local and statewide. All tips coming into the Office are investigated and whenever possible, criminal cases are developed.

Sheriff’s Enforcement Team members work in an undercover capacity and work varying hours. We are available on short notice to investigate crimes where time is of the essence.

In the first nine months of 2009, Sheriff’s Enforcement Team detectives have investigated 144 cases and have effected 104 arrests. The Team has confiscated 5,460 grams or marijuana, and hundreds of tablets of ecstasy, vicodin and methadone. We have also confiscated 17 grams of heroin. The Team has seized $32,000.00 in cash, thus far in 2009.

Under the “umbrella” of the Sheriff’s Enforcement Team, investigators are assigned to Fugitive Apprehension, the Oakland-Macomb Interdiction Team (OMIT), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the County of Macomb Enforcement Team (COMET).

The cost to the Macomb County taxpayer, for the Sheriff’s Office to run the Sheriff Special Enforcement Team is $1.00 per year, per person.

Fugitive Apprehension

At any given time, there are over 5000, active felony and misdemeanor warrants in Macomb County. Members of the Sheriff’s Enforcement Team focus on apprehending these fugitives. These investigators work closely with the United States Marshall Service, and some are federally “deputized” and therefore have nationwide jurisdiction.

The warrants are prioritized with the dangerous felons getting the highest priority.

This “Team” works varying hours and uses every available resource to arrest violent offenders. 

During the first 10 months of 2009, 209 “wanted” persons were arrested.

Oakland/Macomb Interdiction Team (O.M.I.T.)

The Macomb Sheriff’s Office has two investigators assigned to the Oakland/Macomb Interdiction Team.

The Oakland Macomb Interdiction Team (OMIT) operates under the Oakland County Narcotic Enforcement Team (NET) in the southeast Michigan area. The interdiction team consists of investigators from Oakland County, Macomb County, DEA, and local police departments. The concept of interdiction is a program utilizing local assets to generate intelligence on interstate drug and money couriers. OMIT investigates narcotic trafficking through hotel, airport, and package interdiction. The interdiction team seizes approximately $1 million dollars a year.

In 2009, the Oakland/Macomb Interdiction Team participated in 573 investigations, arrested 129 persons for 313 criminal charges.

Drug Enforcement Administration

One investigator is assigned full-time to a federal drug investigation Task Force. This Task Force works under the authority of the Drug Enforcement Agency. This investigator develops cases through tips received from the DEA. The investigator assigned to the DEA Task Force focuses on lengthy and complex investigations and those that span multiple jurisdictions.

Internal Revenue Service

In addition to his responsibilities as S.E.T. investigator, one of the Team members is assigned to an Internal Revenue Service Task Force. Suspicious Activity Reports (S.A.R.S.) are reviewed and investigations are conducted. This assignment provides the Sheriff’s Enforcement team with access to databases, financial information, tax forms, and allows for another avenue for prosecution of criminals.

This deputy is federally “deputized” which allows for jurisdiction across state lines.

In return for his assistance, the Internal Revenue Service provides a vehicle, cell phone, training and related expenses. This greatly offsets the cost of the position and its overall impact on the Sheriff budget.

County of Macomb Enforcement Team

The Sheriff’s Office has three members assigned to C.O.M.E.T. This State Police run group was originally formed in 1982, and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office has been a participant since its inception.

Investigators assigned to COMET are partially funded by the Edward Byrne Federal/Memorial Grant. The federal grant pays one-third of the expense of the three investigators assigned. Much of the remaining expense is obtained through the forfeiture of assets.

COMET makes annual disbursements (taken from forfeiture funds) to participating departments. COMET utilizes a multi-jurisdictional approach and its 21 persons are separated into a Community Response Team, a Narcotics Team and a Conspiracy Team. They typically conduct over 100 narcotics investigation in any given year, and the caseload is steadily increasing.

The cost to the Macomb County taxpayer, for the Sheriff’s Office to run the County of Macomb Enforcement Team is $.22 (twenty-two cents) per year, per person.

The wide range of training, resources, and diverse personnel assigned to the Macomb Sheriff Enforcement Team makes the group invaluable in addressing the changing crime trends in Macomb County. Whether the problem is drugs sales, armed robberies, or home invasions, the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team has the ability to assemble quickly and the expertise to address the problem.
